Hymn to Montreal: A century of music

Focusing mainly on Montreal’s popular Ste-Catherine Street, this walking tour will acquaint you with some significant places and people in Montreal’s music history. We will cover more than a century of music, starting in the late 1800s, and we will touch upon many musical genres, including folk, jazz, operetta, rock, classical and church music.

Along the way, you will be introduced to:

  • Some of the great Montreal-born musicians, singers and composers, such as Oscar Peterson, Wilfrid Pelletier, Monique Leyrac and Leonard Cohen
  • What is considered to be the largest music and arts festival ever held in the western world
  • A venue which became the city’s center of gravity for alternative music during the 1980s and 1990s
  • The life in Montreal of the composer of Canada’s national anthem.
  • The post-WWII effervescence of French music clubs
  • The oldest music retailer still in operation in North America
  • Montreal’s most influential impresario in the 19th century
  • And much more.

This is the only walking tour entirely dedicated to the rich history of music in Montreal. The duration of this tour is 2 hours 30 minutes and it is offered by a certified guide who has a permit from the city of Montreal and is a member of the Montreal Professional Tourist Guide Association.
